My timeline keeps getting cluttered with replies to people I haven’t followed at all, which can get annoying fast. It would be nice if there were some way to filter out these replies from the home timeline on the backend side, and only show replies sent to me or people I follow.
I assume those replies are from people that you follow though. I use it as a way to discover new poeple to follow sometimes, but I understand why you might not want them in your timeline. 
On the home-TL (right on the top bar) there’s a filter icon which gives you a drop down with filter options, including to only show replies to follows. It filters on the backend using the reply_visibility query parameter.
